Our Story

Start Without a Shot was born from a simple yet profound realization: the traditional starting pistol, a symbol of celebration in races, can be a source of trauma for many. In a world where the echoes of gun violence are all too familiar, we asked ourselves, “How can we make the starting line a place of unity and safety for everyone?”

In 2024, amidst global conflicts and a heightened awareness of mental health, original corporate sponsor, Nova Post, in collaboration with Barking Owl, Gres Todorchuk, and Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, sought to redefine the race commencement experience. Our mission was clear: replace the triggering sound of a gunshot with a harmonious signal that resonates with inclusivity and peace.

With original ideas drawing inspiration from the trembita, a traditional Ukrainian alpine horn, we crafted a sound that was both culturally significant and universally calming. This new auditory cue, tested rigorously with neuroscientists and PTSD-affected individuals, demonstrated a sevenfold reduction in stress responses compared to traditional starting sounds.

Our debut at the Nova Post First Barrier-Free Marathon in Kyiv was more than an event; it was a statement. A statement that races can honor tradition while embracing change, that they can be competitive yet compassionate.

Start Without a Shot is more than a movement; it's a call to action. We invite race organizers worldwide to join us in creating events where every participant feels safe, seen, and celebrated. Together, let's set a new standard—one where the start of a race signifies hope, not harm.
